  • Original surface

The original finish left on a part by CNC machining is called the ‘raw surface’. Small machining lines are visible to the naked eye, but are still smooth to the touch. The surface roughness is Ra125 and can be finished to reduce the roughness, but at an increased cost. Raw surfaces provide the best dimensional accuracy and are preferred for parts with tight tolerances.
  • Sand blasting

Sandblasting is a reductive surface treatment in which a pressurised gun fires a stream of abrasive glass beads at a part to remove a thin layer of surface. The process creates a consistent matte/brushed surface finish on the part and is often used to remove knife marks or defects. If your part requires features with tight tolerances, then it needs to be considered that sandblasting will remove a thin layer.
  • Electropolishing

Electrolytic polishing, also known as acid polishing, is an electrochemical process used to reduce the surface roughness of materials to provide a smooth, lustrous finish. It works by passing an electric current through a workpiece submerged in a bath of electrolyte. This causes the peaks on the surface to oxidise and dissolve more quickly than the recesses, resulting in a smooth surface. The process is often used in conjunction with anodising to give parts a shiny anodised finish.
  • Anodic oxidation

Anodizing is an electrochemical finishing process that adds a natural oxide layer to the surface of a part. The anodic coating protects the part from corrosion and can be dyed in a variety of colors. The coating is non-conductive, so it can be masked off in areas that need to remain conductive. Aluminum and titanium are the most common materials used for anodizing. There are two types of anodizing, sulfur anodizing (Type II) and hard anodizing (Type III).
  • Polishing

Polishing is a mechanical process in which progressively finer abrasives are polished to obtain a shiny mirror finish. The finish is highly reflective, smooth and free of scratches. Polishing is usually performed on hard materials such as stainless steel and 7075 aluminum; softer metals such as 6061 aluminum may cause their surfaces to distort when polished. The highly smooth surface finish also makes it more resistant to corrosion.
